MHW-3Bomber makes some good stuff. So when I was in the market for a good scale for both espresso and pour-over coffee for under $50, I knew wanted to review the MHW-3Bomber Cube Coffee Scale 2.0 Mini.
It seemed to have all the features I wanted, but with 4 out 5 star on Amazon, I wanted to know if it was a good scale to buy for the average coffee consumer. I found out.
Read on and watch the video at the end.
Cube 2.0 Mini Scale Features
Perfect size - 4.9”x4.9”x1'“ which means it will fit on your espresso machine and work perfectly for all pour-over applications beside Chemex
Solid construction – this scale has a hard plastic body and a reverse actuation meaning water won’t get into its components. It also has traction pads on the bottom so that it stays in one place.
Weighing capacity - 0.1 grams, which is the standard for coffee scales. Toggles between ounces and grams if you need both. Weighs up to 2000g, which is perfectly suitable for nearly every coffee brewing occasion.
Manual or auto timing - Start the integrated timer yourself (which is what I do, generally) or turn on the auto-timer functionality.
Pressure sensing auto-on with auto-tare - Just set your coffee carafe on the scale and it will turn on and tare so you’re ready to brew immediately.
Rechargeable integrated battery - Easy to recharge with USB-C cable.
Auto shut-off - No need to worry about it staying on and the battery dying with these auto shut-off feature that kicks in after 30 minutes.
LED screen - A sharp and bright LED screen leads the way to a great cup of coffee.
Silicone heat pad - Prevents damage to scale and doubles as a prop for your portafilter.
My Experience with the Cube Coffee Scale 2.0 Mini
Pros
I really like this scale.
Ease of use: It’s pretty simple to get going quickly with this scale.
Design: Very well done. The reverse actuation style that Acaia started has become a standard because it prevents water from getting into the internal components. Looks sleek on the bar.
Comes charged: Nothing worse than opening a new piece of gear and having to charge it. Well done.
Responsive: Very quick response on buttons and when weighing.
Cons
The Cube 2.0 Mini is not without its flaws.
Name: What’s this scale actually called? Is it “MHW-3BOMBER Cube Coffee Scale 2.0 Mini” like the box and your website says, or is it “MHW-3BOMBER Mini Coffee Scale Espresso Scale” like on Amazon. Please pick one.
User interface: A little confusing at first. The large “T” doesn’t mean tare, it means “timer.” Nothing a couple reviews of the instructions won’t fix. Other scales like the Acaia brand make things crazy easy, but it comes at a cost.
Auto-timing: Related to the above, the auto-timing feature is a bit confusing to get started. What is implemented for convenience becomes an inconvenience.
Charging: You must use a USB-C to USB-A cable for this. Slightly annoying that you can’t use a USB-C to USB-C like all phones are now, but they supply one so get a brick and you’re fine. I didn’t have issues but make sure you don’t use a fast charger on this.
Susceptibility to heat: MWH-3Bomber warns that you should use the silicone pad when using this scale because anything over 60°C or 140°F could damage it. Fair enough.
Final Thoughts - 88/100 Rating
After using this scale for a couple weeks, I give it an 88/100 rating. The value for the money is pretty spot-on. It does what you need it to, but it also has a couple issues such as the charging cable and user interface to tighten up. I would definitely recommend it to the average coffee drinker who needed a good pour-over coffee or espresso scale under $50 but I may also recommend they spend a little more for the Normcore Pocket Scale.
