What is Cold Foam?
If you saw my recent review of the DREO BaristaMaker Frother, you may have gotten the cold foam bug. Honestly, I didn’t know what cold foam was until 2022, when my baristas at the Coliseum coffee truck told me about it. Cold foam is a light, creamy topping used primarily for cold coffee drinks. It's made by frothing cold milk (often with a small amount of flavoring) until it becomes airy and smooth. It’s AMAZING, definitely better than paying for it at Starbucks or some other less-than-great shops. Here’s how I make it and how you should make it, too.
An absolute banger. Don't miss it.
Ingredients:
45 ml (3 tbsp) heavy whipping cream
30 ml (2 tbsp) whole - or 2% milk
15 ml (1 tbsp) vanilla syrup - grab Torani if you don’t want to make your own
Equipment:
(Automated Option) Nespresso Aeroccino
(Optional) Acaia (spendy) or zeroHero (thrifty) digital scale
Instructions:
Combine all ingredients in a small jar — I like these from Hario — but make sure you don’t use something too big.
Choose your frothing method:
1. Use the Bodum hand frother for a manual approach
Opt for the Aeroccino for effortless, walk-away–and-come-back-in-2-minutes frothing
For Bodum-method, froth for about 20-30 seconds until light and fluffy. It will about double in volume.
Pour over your favorite iced coffee and enjoy!
This versatile cold foam recipe works great with various coffee drinks and can be customized with different syrups for unique flavors. Try it with your morning cold brew or afternoon iced latte for a cafe-style experience at home.
Buy the gear:
Torani vanilla syrup
zeroHero mini digital scale
Hario beaker (500ml)
Pro Tips:
For the best results, ensure your cream and milk are cold before frothing.
Experiment with flavored syrups to create unique cold foam variations.
Invest in quality coffee beans to complement your homemade cold foam.
That’s how it’s done, folks. Have a different method? I’d love to hear about it. Hit me up on socials.
